LEATHERS - WASTES

La Maison MIRÉN, as a lover and defender of animals does not sacrifice animals to obtain their leather

All leathers are obtained from waste derived from the food chain, reusing waste

PRODUCTS CERTIFICATION by I.CE.C

Institute of Quality Certification for the Leather Sector

Leather from Leather Working Group gold/silver-rated audited tanneries.

Leather is a sustainable material, the impact in its manufacture is very low due to the important environmental controls existing in the EU. Due to the high resistance and durability of leather, much less waste is generated compared to synthetic products.
In addition, if the remains generated by the meat industries were not used for the manufacture of leather, there would be a surplus of skins from the food that would directly be waste.

According to the Leather Naturally association, modern leather manufacturing recycles around 7.3 million tons, which would go to landfill.

Leather is biodegradable and a completely natural product. Hence, genuine leather, due to the action of bacteria and fungi, decomposes much faster than those manufactured artificially, which remain much longer until they decompose.

We make from waste an excellent quality material

SOLES
Le Rêve

SOLES

The Soles are made of vegetable tanned Tuscan leather.

The raw hides used for the production of the sole leather are themselves a sustainable material, a food industry waste, otherwise destined to be disposed of. It is, in other words, a renewable byproduct that the tanning industry recovers and transforms into a high value added product.

TANNINS
Extracts from chestnut, mimosa and quebracho plants.

The vegetable tanned sole leather industry is sustainable by nature: it involves an age-old production process that has remained the same over the centuries, and is a virtuous example of circular economy.

The leather is a 100% natural, renewable, recycled resource.

RESPONSIBLE FORESTRY
The use of the tannin is sustainable because the plant species from which it is obtained either grow spontaneously from suckers (as in the case of chestnut), or are grown in nurseries and continually replanted at each cutting cycle (as in the case of mimosa and quebracho).

The producers are also supplementing their certification in accordance with the PEFC standard (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes), which further ensures proper and sustainable management of the plant resources from which the tannins are obtained.

REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT – A CIRCULAR MODEL
Solid waste recycling

The recovery by the Consortium Companies of the organic waste produced in the first stages of processing is fundamental as it removes organic matter rich in proteins and fats (such as collagen, peptides and waste gelatine) from the waste cycle, which can then be used in the food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. Waste water from the industrial process is directed to centralised purification plants in the area to be appropriately purified before being released into the receiving bodies (rivers, canals, etc.).

WATER RECOVERY
Waste water from the industrial process is channelled to centralised purification plants in Tuscany for appropriate purification.

Cuoio di Toscana guarantees a product that is:
– metal-free
– hexavalent chromium-free
– formaldehyde-free
– aromatic amine-free

GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD

ECOLOGY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

CRÊPE SATIN 100% Silk - 100% Organic

La Maison MIRÉN only uses silk from organic cultivation, certified by GOTS.

Silk is a renewable resource and 100% biodegradable with less impact on the environment than many other fabrics.

We only use Silk that is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified.

Meaning its production has defined the strict environmental and social criteria along the entire natural textiles supply chain. Not only is the seed and farming organic, but all of the production processes, including dyeing and printing, do not use any harmful chemicals.

No silkworm is killed during the production of Silk. Instead of boiling the silkworm alive, they are allowed to hatch. They can do this because the farmers make small cuts at a certain position in the cocoon. This allows the silkworms to hatch almost naturally and maintain the precious filament at the same time. The cocoons are collected as a residual product in nature and then boiled (without the pupa inside), always respecting the Silkworm.

Manufacturing processes must meet stringent criteria for residue of hazardous substances, following the following Restricted Substances List (RSL).

Machine oils coming in touch with organic textiles must be heavy metal-free.

Certification to GOTS helps to ensure compliance with each of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals

GOTS evaluates the processing and manufacturing of textiles on the basis of both, environmental and social criteria.
